Liberty Bell with Label - General Nathanael Greene
Subscriber Only Edition
Winter 2025 Mail Sale Commentary
Lot 32 04202 — Liberty Bell Forever Stamp highlighting General Nathanael Greene — Subscriber only Edition — 4-12-07
The first thing you will notice on this cover is the large Liberty Bell in addition to the stamp.
When I purchased them, I noted that each sheet had one of these large, impressive bells and that it had adhesive backing the same as the stamp. It dawned on me that on a cover the effect would be quite spectacular, so that is what I did for these limited covers. And the large Liberty Bell is tied along with the new forever stamp to the envelope with the day of issue postmark from Philadelphia, the current home of the actual Liberty Bell.
Wanting to provide a truly special patriotic cachet, I decided to honor General Nathanael Greene. This extraordinary Revolutionary War officer was second only to George Washington.
They shared the distinction of being the only two Continental Army generals to serve throughout the entire War of Independence from start to finish. Greene fought on the battlefields of Trenton, Princeton, Brandywine, Germantown, and Monmouth. He also then served as Commander of the Southern Department from 1780 to 1783. He was, perhaps, the war's greatest strategist, and I'm pleased that I was able to honor this steadfast patriot on my limited-edition first day cover. The FDC is hand painted in beautiful watercolors and is enhanced by the large Liberty Bell.
