United Postal Service on Mr. and Mrs. Eames: "Their extraordinary body of creative furniture, architecture, films, exhibits, and other artistic pieces reflected the nation's youthful and inventive outlook after World War II "
The Collins hand painted cachets in this First Day Cover set will pay tribute to the war and post-war years of this era by featuring the screen stars of motion pictures and television during that time period in our nation's history. It can be assumed that all or most of the personalities honored enjoyed the new and innovative artistic creations of Mr. and Mrs. Eames who were their contemporaries during the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s.
Charles was born in St. Louis, Missouri on June 17, 1907 exactly one hundred and one years before this First Day of Issue. Bernice Alexandra Kaiser was born in 1912 in Sacramento, California. She
lived in New York City during the 1930s where she acquired the nickname "Ray," and later she legally made it her first name The couple met at Cranbrook Academy in 1940 and married in 1941. They moved to California where they began their artistic creativeness that became so popular in the United States. A following began among many famous people (thus the connection to my cachets), and soon their products were being produced and sold to average citizens. Theirs is truly a story of American ingenuity and entrepreneurship, and I'm pleased to pay tribute to them with this set of individually hand painted First Day Covers. Their creations and inventions are shown on the various stamps with the cachets depicting famous entertainers of the Eames' post-World War II era. It was a time of growth and happiness on the victorious home front, and these covers combine the themes of innovative consumerism, artistic expression, and wholesome entertainment. The good old days.
