A Day in America
Evening/Seniors — American Legion
This is the fourth and final cover in the American Flag — A Day in America mini-set. The four stamps showed our flag at different times of the day. To review, the cachet design approach that I decided to employ was one of symbolism. For starters, I opted to place the four stamps at different locations across the top of the envelope from left to right. They symbolize the day starting with the morning at the far left. The set now concludes with the evening and the stamp is positioned at the far right. To go a step further, the cachet art depicts Americans in different stages of life with youth representing morning, adulthood_ _noon, middle age — afternoon, and now, -finally seniors as evening. A proud American Legionnaire holds the flag high in this hand painted cover.
As a final component of this set, I wanted to include a personal connection of the cachetmaker to this theme. As a youth, I was both a Boy Scout and Explorer Scout. Upon reaching adulthood, I was in the military and served proudly in Viet Nam. During middle age there were many years of community volunteerism mostly in PAL, GAL, and Little League sports activities. And now, as I highlight the American Legion, I can go full circle back to my youth with the recollection of the academic award that the organization presented to me upon my eighth grade graduation.
This has been a fun set to work with. It does represent the "Spirit of America". It's been a while since I offered the first three, so please make sure that you have them. I'm pleased to present the final flag cover in the series. American Legion — The Flag in the Evening. Collins #J4404 — $13.25.
