Football Action Cachet

One of the traditions of Thanksgiving that many of us grow up with is football. My grandparents' house was in Butler right across the street from the high school field. In the morning we would arrive early in the day and attend the 10:30 a.m. season-ending game as the bulldogs took on their arch rival, the Pompton Lakes Cardinals. Both my parents had graduated from Butler, and little did I know that my future wife Linda would be a Pompton Lakes graduate. After the game it was a two-minute walk back to the house where Nannie would serve her bountiful and delicious holiday dinner with all the trimmings. Then, it would be an afternoon of college football on television with a few nodding heads after the big meal. Today the football link continues all across the country — mostly with the pro-games of the NFL.

My hand painted cachet captures the excitement of the game. Two players pursue a loose ball as a cheerleader with pom-poms encourages the crowd. The two new Thanksgiving stamps feature a marching band so they fit right into the football theme. And I've chosen watercolors that complement the reds and golds that are prevalent in the stamps. It's a really nice First Day Cover.

When this strip of four stamps was announced, I wasn't sure how my cachets would evolve. In the end I went with traditional themes because that's what Thanksgiving is about. The resulting hand painted cachets capture a special slice of Americana. And yes, those long-ago football games in Nannie's parlor would be interrupted when she called us in for a slice of homemade pumpkin pie. Memories.
