William S . Sims

Sims graduated from the Naval Academy in 1880. After 17 years of sea duty, he served as the naval attaché in France, Russia, and Spain. He then served as the naval aide to President Teddy Roosevelt for two and a half years. When the U.S. entered World War I, he was promoted to Vice Admiral in charge of all U.S. destroyers operating from British bases. In quick succession, his title was changed to Commander, United States Naval Forces operating in European waters.

After the war, Admiral Sims became president of the Naval War College and stayed in that position until his retirement in 1922. The hand painted cachet is a watercolor of a ship he served on — the battleship U.S.S. Minnesota. Now ready is distinguished sailor William S. Sims. Collins #K470 $14.00.
