Bill Mauldin was a Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist who was most famous for his two World War II infantry soldier characters "Willie and Joe." Through his cartoons, Bill depicted the front-line hardships and struggles that our Second World War foot soldiers had to endure. They were published in the military newspaper Stars and Stripes as wel as numerous publications throughout the U.S. Mauldin's cartoons made him a hero to the common soldier. GIs often credited him with helping them get through the war. In September of 1943, his bond with U.S. troops everywhere was strengthened forever when he was wounded by a German mortar while visiting an American machine gun crew on the front lines. This Collins cover is a scarce gem, particularly for who collect military-themed covers.
