Boy Scouts of America - Centennial

Lieutenant-General Robert Baderr-Powell

Founder and First Chief Scout

Collins Cover Announcement

Scouting

Robert Baden-Powell

At the turn of the last centwy, a British officer took an interest in providing boys with experiences that would foster self-reliance and introduce them to the joys of the great outdoors. On August 1, 1907, he took some sons of friends on a camping trip. He then wrote "Scouting for Boys" intended for young readers. Since its publication, it has sold 150 million copies, becoming the fourth best-selling book of the 20th Century. His sister, Agnes Baden-Powell formed the Girl Guides in 1910 and encouraged her friend Juliette Gordon Low to found the Girl Scouts of the USA. Because of the efforts of this brother and sister team, American youth have now enjoyed scouting for over 100 years.

My individually hand painted cachet features a portrait of Baden-Powell in uniform. It goes well with the design of the new stamp which is to the lower right with its first day of issue postmark. To the left is the Scout Oath and to the right I list the twelve elements of the Scout Law. This is a very distinctive Collins First Day Cover, and I'm pleased to offer it as a tribute to the founder of the world scouting movement —

Robert Baden-Powell. Collins #X4702 —$14.00.

Lot 27 X4702 — Scouting Founder — Robert Baden-Powell — 7/27/10

Powell was a British Army officer as well as founder and First Chief Scout of the worldwide scouting movement. He wrote the first editions of Scouting for Boys. With his sister Agnes he founded the International Girl Guide/Girl Scout movement. Robert also wrote Aids to Scouting. In 1910 Baden-Powell retired from the Army and formed "The Scout Association." This stamp commemorates the 100ffi Anniversary of that event. The hand painted cachet is of Robert in uniform and has the "Scout Oath" and "Scout Law." Growing up in West Milford, every Wednesday night from age eleven to seventeen, I and the rest of the troop would recite both of them to start our meetings. Jim Van Hooker, the scoutmaster, was a great role model, an accomplished outdoorsman, and a builder of character. This cover is dedicated to you, "Hook." A great scouting cachet.
