American Treasures

Boys in a Pasture by Winslow Home

Collins Cover Announcement

Winslow Homer

Winslow was an American painter best known for his marine subjects. He is considered one of our country's finest 19th Century artists. For the most part, Homer was self taught and began his career as a commercial illustrator. He soon took up oil painting and then began to work extensively in watercolors.

One of his finest paintings — "Breezing Up" was exhibited at the nation's 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. The New York "Tribune" wrote, "There is no picture in this exhibition, nor can we remember when there has been a picture in any exhibition, that can be named alongside this. " Homer's subject is a father and his three sons on an outing in their sailboat "Gloucester. " It's a perfect topic for cachet art, and the fact that it is hand painted in watercolors on each and every cover is a nice tribute to that great American master — Winslow-Homer. Collins #Y4701 — $14.00.
