Dire Wolf

In Latin, the name of this prehistoric fierce carnivorous mammal is "canis dims" which translates to fearsome dog. It was of a heavier build than the modern gray wolf and was common in North and South America. A big dire wolf would have been considerably larger than those wolves found in the wild today, and their teeth were longer. Many paleontologists think that the dire wolf used its relatively large teeth to crush bone.

My individually hand painted cachet shows this ferocious predator howling at the full moon. It's a wonderful wildlife cachet, and the prehistoric animals depicted give this set a nice twist exclusive to Collins covers. As with the woolly mammoth, ferns line the foreground and give the interesting cachet a nice touch.

It is my belief that this mini-set of five will become hunted gems in. the First Day Cover hobby, so make sure you get them all as they are offered. Now ready is canis dims, the dire wolf. Collins #G5304 —$15.00.
