The Civil War

Battle of Mobile Bay

Collins Cover Announcement

The Civil War Battle of Mobile Bay

On August 5, 1864, Union Admiral David Farragut, Commander of a Federal Navy fleet, attacked a smaller Confederate fleet under Southern Admiral Franklin Buchanan and three forts that guarded the entrance to Mobile Bay. Farragut took his ships through a minefield and past the range of the rebel heavy shore gun. After a fierce battle, his ships had reduced the southern  fleet to a single vessei — the ironclad CSS Tennessee.

This single ship took on the entire northern force and her armor made it possible to maintain a prolonged fight, but finally the larger number of Union ships reduced the Tennessee to a motionless hulk in the water. Within days the three Confederate forts surrendered, and control of the area switched to the North with the victory.

My individually hand painted cachet depicts the battle as it rages on the bay. The colors coordinate perfectly with the new stamp, and the two flags at the bottom present a fine visual contrast to the scene. The Battle of Mobile Bay is now ready. Collins #S5302 at $15.00.
