Farmers Markets
Baked Goods and Dairy Products
This attractive individually hand painted cachet begins my new mini-set of folr that features the wonderful produce and products sold across America in farmers markets. My first cover has a representation of baked goods and dairy products as does the new stamp. Just as a side note, in my opinion, all four of the farmers markets stamps are extremely well designed and visually pleasing.
The subject matter in this cachet takes me back to my early years growing up at Collins Ponds. My mother and grandmother were superb cooks, and their homemade baked goods were scrumptious. Incredible bread was Nannie's specialty, and to this day various descendants try to emulate her unwritten recipe to no avail. Mom liked to use fruit from the property or local area, and I can still taste her oven-warm blueberry muffins from the wild berries we picked down by Echo Lake.
For the longest time, we had three goats, and for years and years afterwards, Dad got kidded about the names he chose for them. There wasn't much creative thinking in Brownie, Whitey, and Spotty. Decades later when he had two cats, I think their names were the result of the long-term ribbing. The black one he called Snowball, and the white one he named Midnight. As a teenager he had worked at a goat dairy, so the one in my cachet is with fond memories.
Along with vegetables and fruit, we sold eggs at our tiny roadside stand from the white leghorns and Rhode Island reds that we always had. A basket of fresh eggs, some cheese, and a crock of butter complete the dairy portion of the cachet. If, starting in the late 40s after World War II, there had been farmers markets, Mom and Dad would have been present with their bountiful harvest from Collins Ponds. This set is for them. Now available — Baked Goods/Dairy Products. Collins #T5301 at $15.00.
