These distinctive and lovely birds are always a treat to see in the wild. The female is a buff brown with some red highlights on the wings and tail. Sometimes a few red streaks appear on the tips of the head fathers. The female has a black patch at the base of a her bill as does her mate. The male is an all-red bird, and the crimson color makes for easy spotting. Both have the familiar crested heads.
