An ice cream sundae consists of one or more scoops of ice cream topped by a syrup and/or sauce and often other toppings such as whipped cream, sprinkles, fruit, maraschino cherries, and others. In 1881 a Wisconsin soda fountain owner drizzled warm chocolate syrup over vanilla ice cream, and the hot fudge sundae was created.
