World War I Centennial

Turning the Tide

Cover Announcement

The United States

Enters WorldWar I

During the first few years of World War 1, the predominant opinion of the American public was that the United States military should be kept out of the conflict. President Woodrow Wilson maintained a fairly small Army but did expand the size of the Navy.

ln 191 7 Germany declared unrestricted submarine warfare and began sinking American merchant ships. As enemy U-boats prowled and terrorized the North Atiantic, President Wilson asked Congress for "A war to end all wars" and on April 6, 1917 the U. S. declared war. American troops began arriving on the European Wrestern front in 1918. and the expanded American Nary became a world power. The tide w'as turning!

My individually hand painted cachet makes this a superb first day cover. Shown are a naval seaman and an Army infantryman in the World War I uniforms. They stand in front of Oid Glory. What puts this Collins cover over the top in terms of visual impact is the gold background which corresponds perfectly to the color in the every attractive stamp. Now ready is "Tuming theTide" - U.S. in World War I. Collins#A5801- $15.00
