Alabama Statehood

Bicentennial

Pulpit Rock, Cheaha State Park

Cover Announcement

This stamp celebrates the Bicentennial of Alabama which became a state in 1819. Since the first day of issue city was Huntsville, I decided to make that the focus of my individually hand painted cachets.

The city is known as "The Rocket City" because of its ciose association with Uniteci States space missions. On July 1. 1960, NASA's George C. Marshall Space Flight Center was founded. President Dwight Eisenhouer dedicated the center on September 8th of that year. and rocket scientist Werner Von Braun was its first director.

During the 1960's. the primary mission of the center was to develop the Sarurn rocket boosters used by NASA in the Apollo Lunar Landing Program. During the era of the Space Shuttle flights and currently with the International Space Station Program, the center continues to play a leading role in space technology and hardware development.

My hand painted cachets show an astronaut within a space suit. To the left, a rocket blasts off, and below, a rendition of the Space Station is presented. Huntsville plays a vital role in our space program, and I'm pleased to recognize "The Rocket City." Alabama Statehood - 1819 to 2019 is now ready. Collins #M5801
