This individually hand painted cachet captures one of the most iconic events of United States history and in fact, world history - the first landing of mankind on the Earth's moon. The space mission was Apollo II, and it was a wonderful success. On July 20, 1969, the landing module "Eagle" descended to the lunar surface, and Neil Arnsfrong became the first to walk on the moon.

The new stamp has its first day of issue postmark Cape Canaveral, Florida. The design features our American flag planted in the gray lunar soil. Neil looks on as he contemplates the mission's astounding accomplishment. The eagle had landed!
