Native Americans have lived along the Mississippi River and its tributaries for thousands of years. This amazing set of ten individually hand painted covers starts in northern Minnesota. Native tribes would often follow, the weather, and this cachet shows a group of Plains natives at their summer camp on the shore of Lake ltasca.
This lake is the source for the beginning of the Mississippi which flows 2340 miles south to the Gulf of Mexico. In order, it passes through Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, lllinois, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Louisiana. The arrival of Europeans in the 16th Century increasingly changed the lives of the Native Americans. First were the explorers and missionaries followed by the settlers.
