Along with its many tributaries, the Mississippi drains all or part of thiry-two states between the Rocky Mountains and the Appalachians along with two Canadian provinces. The soil extending from the banks of the river is among the most fertile in the world. My cachet for Iowa shows the cultivation of corn with the mighty Mississippi in the background. The waterway provided the means of transportation for getting the harvest to market.
