Mighty Mississippi

Gateway Arch, MO

Cover Announcement

Old Man River has remained a great north-south waterway for vessels of all types from canoes and dugouts in early times to the commercial shipping of today. In this set, in addition to canoes, the two types are the home crafted log raft and the stern-wheeler steam river boat. The Missouri hand painted cachet takes us back to the days of Mark Twain's Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. Three boys have taken their log raft for a day of fishing and "hanging out" together. Note the primitive fishing poles, the bare feet and the magic of youth.

If one point along the majestic waterway symbolizes the westem movement toward the Pacific Ocean, it could be St. Louis. Here where the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers join together, stands the inspiring great arch. From this place, brave explorers and steadfast pioneers pushed westward.
