Numerous species of birds flourish along the river. I chose the spectacular great blue heron to represent them. This is a large wading bird and can be found near bodies of water with abundant fish. In addition to fish, their diet consists of frogs and snakes, along with an occasional small mammal such as voles. They locate food by sight, spear quickly with their long, sharp bill, and swallow it whole. My hand painted cachet captures this magnificent bird wading in the shallow waters along the great river in Arkansas.
