Fred's Anecdotal Note

White-Tailed I)eer

A Mother's Love

In a nearby forested hemlock grove, a doe has tamped down a depression in the snow, transforming the small area into a forest bed. Her body heat and the insulating effect of surrounding snow will keep a precious fawn warm overnight. The thick evergreen branches, weighted down by the heavy snow, form a hemlock curtain that, along with the coming darkness, will conceal the pair from any predator such as the prowling bobcat. The fawn will sleep soundly in the winter hideaway, but the mother will remain on alert throughout the night.
