Maine Statehood Bicentenary
Sea at Ogunquit by Edward Hopper
Nubble Lighthouse
Cover Announcement
ln 1874 Congress appropriated $15,000 to build a light station at the "Nubble" in York Harbor, Maine. Cape Neddick Lighthouse was dedicated and put in service in 1879. Plans had been proposed to put a light at this site as far back as 1837. The beacon is 88 feet above sea level. A most unusual feature about this lantern room is that the walkway railing that surrounds the circular enclosure is decorated with tiny, beautify 4-inch brass replicas of the lighthouse itself. Amazing!
This is by far, Linda's and my favorite "scenic view" lighthouse which we chanced upon during a Maine vacation in our early, years. The view is stunning as it sits on a small island surrounded by the ocean and a narrow channel. The light tower keeper's house, and small, brilliant red out-building all sit on the green-grassed knoll. Over the years we have shared this picturesque panorama with our children and some of our older grandchildren. One of my new collectors has told me of his special affection for this lovely and inspiring place.
During my research for this cachet. a personal mystery has been solved. Early on I called it the York Harbor Lighthouse because that was the town where it was located. Then I discovered that its actual name was the Cape Neddick Lighthouse. Finally, I learned that Locals and others referred to it as "The Nubble Light." I now know that "nubble" means small lump or protuberance and that it is most appropriately the name of the island upon which the lighthouse sits.
"The Nubble Light" is now ready. Collins #M5901 at $16.50.
