West Side Story is a musical that was inspired by William Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet. It was written by Jerome Robbins with music by Leonard Bernstein. The story takes place in the mid-1950s in the Upper West Side of Manhattan. The plot and conflicts evolve around Maria, sister of the Shaxks' steet gang's leader Bernardo, falling in love with Tony, best friend of the Jets street gang's leader Riff.

The hand painted cachet features Tony and Maria on stage with dancers in the background. West Side Story ran for 732 performances from its debut in 1957. It then went on tour. A 1961 motion picture was nominated for eleven Academy Awards and won ten including Best Picture.
