Mid-Atlantic Lighthouses

Montauk Point, NY

Cover Announcement

This hand painted cover begins my series of five Mid-Atlantic Lighthouses. The set is in an interesting and eye-catching format. These maritime covers are known as "entires" because the whole face of the envelope is taken up by the cachet, stamp, and cancel. As I've done before for Lighthouse stamps, I'm using the envelope in a vertical position to better portray the long shapes of the lights.

Montauk was the first lighthouse in New York State and is the fourth oldest active lighthouse in the United States. Construction was authorized by the Second United States Congress under President George Washington on April 12, 1792. On March 2, 2072, the light became a National Historic Landmark.

Included in each Mid-Atlantic Lighthouse cachet is a species of wildlife. For Montauk, a harbor seal suns itself on a coastal rock near the lighthouse. These seals prefer familiar resting spots in rocky areas. Fish constitute the main part of their diet. The range of Atlantic Coast Harbor Seals is from the mouth of the St. Lawrence River in Canada to the beaches of North Carolina.

Now available is the Montauk Point Ligtrthouse. Collins #V6001 at $16.50.
