Barred Owl - Great Horned Owl - Great Gray Owl - Saw Whet Owl

Autum 2019 Mail Sale Commentary

Lot 1 N101 — Owls — 8/26/78

This cover is one that I haven't offered for a long time. Creating this FDC entailed traveling to Fairbanks, Alaska to pick up the four new owl stamps. Two of the stamps with plate numbers have the Fairbanks first day of issue cancel. Wanting to produce a truly unique item, I was then off to McKinley Wildlife Refuge Park (now Denali National Park) where the remaining two owl stamps received a great McKinley Park hand postmark with killer bars. Collins was the only cachetmaker to make it to McKinley. The hand painted cachet depicts a great horned owl in flight, and it really is a distinctive example of wildlife art on my early covers. It should also be noted that the four different owl stamps on this cover are really attractive. If your collection still needs it, do consider making an offer. Only 200 were made, and you will almost never see one offered for sale.

Summer 2023 Mail Sale Commentary

Lot 3 N101 — Owls — 8-26-78

Creating this first day cover entailed traveling to Fairbanks, Alaska to pick up the four new owl stamps on day of issue. A pair of the stamps have the Fairbanks first day of issue cancel. It appeared in Autumn of 2019, and the winning amount was $583. In the Spring of 2022, it went for $401. It just does not come up for sale very often. The McKinley Park postmark is a Collins exclusive, and this cancel ties all the stamps to the cover. A gem.
