 Americana Sandy Hook Lighthouse

C101 & C102 — Sandy Hook Lighthouse with Postmaster Signature — extremely rare 

Sandy Hook Lighthouse was only the third first day cover that Fred produced. The hand-painted cachet shows the very attractive lighthouse enclosed by a gold border. In addition to obtaining postmarks in Atlantic City, the official city of issue, Fred also had each cover canceled in Highlands, NJ - the closest post office to the Sandy Hook Lighthouse. These two lots are very special as each one was signed by the Highlands Postmaster. Only one C101 and one C102 received that signature. Lot 2 C101 — Sandy Hook Lighthouse — 4-14-78

This is only the third cachet I produced. A pair with plate number has the Atlantic City first day of issue postmark. My next stop was up the New Jersey Parkway to Highlands, NJ where I obtained their very nice circular day of issue cancelation on an additional single. The hand painted cachet shows the lighthouse enclosed by a gold border. This is a very classy cover that is most pleasing to the eye. A rare Collins, only 100 covers with this cachet exist, of which 79 have this postmark configuration. The winner of this lot will be adding a magnificent Collins cover to their collection. A fantastic early Collins — only my third. Rare.

Summer 2026 Mail Sale Commentary 

Lot 42 C101 — Sandy Hook Lighthouse — 4/14/78 — 

This FDC has the very nice circular Highlands, New Jersey hand cancel on the lower right-hand corner stamp. It also has a First Day of Issue cancel from Atlantic City, NJ on a pair Lighthouse stamps with plate number in the upper right-hand corner. Then to make it very special and unique, it has the very readable signature of Charles E. O'Keefe, Jr., Postmaster. Fred only made 79 of this Lighthouse variety. However, this is the only C101 cover that exists with the signature of the postmaster.
