Americana Head, Statue of Liberty

Autumn 2026 Mail Sale Commentary

Lot 43 B102 — Statue of Liberty with signature of Postmaster (Only two exist) — 3/31/78

This was Fred's second cachet and as such is rarely seen for sale. He traveled to the main New York City Post Office (Zip Code 10001) where both a plate number single and a coil pair received the large print hand cancel first day of issue postmark (as opposed to the B101's small print machine cancel). To secure an additional cancel, Fred drove north well over a hundred miles to the small village of "Liberty," New York, in the Catskill Mountains. There, a second coil as well as another single were postmarked with a large bullseye with killer bars.

What makes the B102 cover in this lot extra special and truly unique is that, while at the Liberty Post Office, Fred had William Henkelman, who served as Postmaster from 1975 to 1983, sign two of the covers to the left of the Liberty, NY canceled stamps. This will be the only chance to acquire this very early and rare Collins cover with the signature of the Postmaster.
