Robert F. Kennedy

U. S. Attorney General

Autumn 2019 Mail Sale Commentary

S103 — Robert F. Kennedy — 1/12/79

This is a rare early Collins cancel variety that is almost never found on the open market. In fact, it was produced in 1979, and this is the first time I have one in a mail sale. Only 40 were made, so the odds of finding and obtaining one are extremely small. A plate number single is at upper right, and the Arlington, Virginia first day postmark is beautiful as it has thin killer bars which, in itself, is highly unusual and rare. It is where Bobby Kennedy rests eternally near his brother Jack. My next stop was the Senate Building Post Office, which is Washington, D.C. Station No.

22 as shown on the first day cancel obtained there. I wonder if I could still get in today? Doubt it. Also, at that station No. 22 they had a large, double circle magenta rubber stamp cachet showing the Capitol Dome, and I was able to obtain it for each of my Robert F. Kennedy Arlington covers. What a philatelic treasure that is almost impossible to locate, much less acquire. Only 40 in existence.
