Winter 2022 Mail Sale Commentary

Lot 3 Z102 — American Architecture — "Kicking Mule" first day of issue postmark — (6-4-79)

I think this is the first time the elusive and compelling pictorial cancel has appeared in one of my mail sales. A pair of the stamps has the bold "Kicking Mule" first day of issue postmark from "The Show Me Philatelic Center" in Jefferson City, Missouri. The opposite pair has a fantastic large magenta Jefferson City bullseye first day cancel. When I obtained these types of cancels on day of issue, I always felt exhilaration at what had been created. The hand painted cachet shows Thomas Jefferson at his writing desk in front of the Rotunda. It was the first time T painted a cancel variety in a different color scheme than the "01." Only 93 of this cover exist. Very cool "Kicking Mule" Collins cover.
