PRE-COLUMBIAN

Southwest Indian Cultures

A glimpse into the lifestyles of the various areas represented is the route I've decided to travel. The southwest cachet shows desert Indians hoeing the rocky soil. Corn plants are poking their way through the earth as they grow in the hostile environment. The handpainted cachet is particularly noteworthy for the use of desert tones. The bronze skin of the Indians. The golden/browns of the desert floor and rocky outcroppings. The blue sky and green corn providing dramatic contrast. Primitive wooden tools and pottery bowls add a realistic touch.

A single of the stamp is canceled with the San Juan, Puerto Rico postmark. The green and brown colors of the stamp are complemented nicely by the colors used in the cachet. Columbus will be a big topic in 1992 (500th Anniversary) so it would be prudent to pick up these Pre-Columbian issues. Now. Item #M1601. $7.00.
