Steamboats

Experiment, 1788-1790

Collins Cover Announcement

EARLY STEAMBOATS

The Experiment - 1788

It was surprising to learn that a steamboat was in use on our rivers as early as 1788. I never assc, ciated the existence of steamboats with that period of our history. Much truth in the adage that one is never too old to learn.

The hand-painted cachet for this FDC is super. As I mentioned in regard to "The Phoenix", this set of covers is perfect for the watercolor art form. The Experiment is seen steaming up the beautiful Hudson River. Off its bow is a small sailing sloop which it is overtaking. The wooded mountains rise sharply from the water's edge and form a particularly picturesque section of the river known as 'Storm King". The colors given to the Hudson's waters and to the gathering clouds lend a very special appeal to this COLLINS.

There are many paintings by various artists that are known as "Hudson River Art Form". This cover reminds me of that period of paintings and it is a rendition of one of the most beautiful areas in our country. Item #P1502 - $7.25.
