Collins Cover Announcement

AMERICAN ARCHITECTURE

On October 9th, I arrived in New York City early with a couple of friends. After servicing the covers at the main city Post Office, traveled north along the Hudson River to Tarrytown. My friends took some of the covers for a great unofficial at Lyndhurst, N.J.

Arriving in Tarrytown, famous for the tales of author Washington Irving, I was most grateful for the cooperation and hospitality of the Postmaster. When the covers were finished, I headed west across the Tappan Zee Bridge and home.

Both unofficials are large, bold and clear. The pair of covers taken together represent nicely the Lyndhurst Mansion located in Tarrytown. The handpainted cachet, showing Lyndhurst, is very attractive.

Item #E301 - New York, NY hand cancel "First Day of Issue" on Pair; Tarrytown, NY hand cancel on opposite pair. $4.95

Item #E302 - New York, NY hand cancel "First Day of Issue" on pair; Lyndhurst, N.J. hand cancel on opposite pair. Limited. $5.95

Summer 2025 Mail Sale Commentary

Lot 4 E302 — American Architecture — 10/9/80

The set of four very attractive stamps on this cover were purchased in New York City early in the morning on October 9th, 1980. The stamps picture the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C., Trinity Church in Boston, Penn Academy in Philadelphia, and Lyndhurst Mansion in Tarrytown, New York. Two pairs of two 15-cent Architecture stamps were placed on each envelope. Each cover received a nice, clear New York, New York slogan first day of issue cancel on the top two stamps. A friend and I divided the covers and took off in two directions for very appropriate unofficial cancels on the bottom pair. The covers that represent this lot (#E302) received a very distinctive, round, bold and clear Lyndhurst, New Jersey hand cancel with killer bars. This is an early Collins cover that has not been offered previously in a mail sale.
