NEW YEAR STAMP
"The Year of the Rooster"
The hand-painted cachet on this COLLINS First Day Cover is as fresh and crisp looking as the dawn of a new day. And, daybreak is what the handsome rooster in my cachet is celebrating. He is perched on a weathered fence post (note how the barbed wire forms the bottom border of the cachet) and surveys an expansive farming valley below dotted with barns, houses, and fields. A cheery red house stands nearby and coordinates nicely with the bright red stamp. The rooster is realistically painted in colors of russet brown and haystack gold. The familiar red comb crowns his head and complements the red flowers that grow in a nearby garden. A perfect setting for the early morning "cock-a-doodle-doo" that will soon echo across the serene rural setting.
The "First Day of Issue" slogan cancel from San Francisco gives this cover its First Day status. An interesting type style adds to the visual composition and I think this cover captures a splendid scene for the "Year of the Rooster". As the first U.S. New Year's stamp and therefore the first COLLINS New Year's cachet, this is one that will always be special. Item #B2101. $10.75.
