Land Ho! A look-out points to the distant horizon as land suddenly rises above the brilliant blue waters of the Caribbean Sea. From his vantage point in the crow's nest high above the deck, this anonymous seaman, lost forever in the sands of time, makes history as he announces to his crewmates and to his ship's master -- Christopher Columbus -- the discovery of the Western Hemisphere. Of course, these stalwart explorers had no idea of the history-altering event that was unfolding before them. With lines and pulleys and wooden mast being the prominent features of this hand-painted cachet, it is almost startling in its simple portrayal of the discovery. Gentle seas, hovering gulls, and puffy clouds in an expansive sky give a sense of isolated grandeur to the culmination of this most famous voyage of all time.
