Kentucky Statehood

Bicentennial

Collins Cover Announcement

KENTUCKY STATEHOOD

Daniel Boone, America's most famous woodsman and trailblazer, takes an afternoon walk along a forest path in this magnificent COLLINS hand-painted "entire" cachet. A coonskin cap sits atop a face that transmits the stoic, de-terminb-d-bharacter that self-reliant early pathfinders needed to possess in abundance.

A long, fringed buckskin shirt, leggings, and moccasins complete the homespun wardrobe. Cradled in his arms is the Kentucky long rifle to which he looks for protection and food. Joining him on this leisurely trek is his hound dog companion. Opening the Wilderness Road through the Cumberland Gap, Boone's explorations of the uncharted forests were legendary. He claims to have never been lost but does admit to once having been "confused for a week or so".

The detailed hand painting that has made COLLINS First Day Covers famous is in full evidence for this historic issue.

Daniel walks on a high trail past an old oak tree and through outcroppings of huge gray boulders. Visible past the big rocks and down in a valley below is the stockade fort of Boonsborough. This is the settlement that was founded by its namesake to accommodate the first settlers to make their way to Kentucky. Beyond the fort and the clearing that surrounds it stretches a vast track of wild woodlands. Even more distant are rounded foothils and the peaks of far mountains. Truly a glorious cachet that captures the spirit and times of a pre-Revolutionary frontier.

The Bicentennial Statehood stamp featuring "My Old Kentucky Home State Park" is canceled at Danville, Kentucky. The typestyle I chose captures the historic flavor that the cachet portrays. And, what a cachet it is. In the finest hand-painted detailed tradition of COLLINS. Once again the real-life folklore legend walks the Kentucky forest. Behind and before him stretches the youth and vigor of a new nation yet to be

born. Woodsman, pioneer, trailblazer. Dan'l Boone. Item #L2001. $11.25.
