Dorothy Parker - Poet

Collins Cover Anouncement

DOROTHY PARKER - FAMOUS AUTHOR

Dorothy Parker was born in the West End section of Long Branch, N.J., and it was here that the new stamp was issued. A search for a more visually related First Day cancellation, and one that would add decided postal interest to the Parker COLLINS FDCs, quickly turned up a natural. As a result, this cover has a beautiful, large bullseye from Dorothy, New Jersey. It's a nice one!

For my hand-painted cachet I chose to depict the famous author in the same bold color format as the stamp. She sits at her typewriter in a lavender dressing gown. A simple string of beads adds a silent elegance and her distinctive short hair with bangs lends that familiar look that was Dorothy.

Also shown are her literary milestones. Copies of "The New Yorker" and "Vanity Fair" -- magazines for whom she wrote. A book of light verse entitled "Enough Rope". A collection of short stories published as "Here Lies". The 1929 O. Henry award winner "Big Blonde". And, "Close Harmony" with a red

rose cover.

Dorothy died on June 7, 1967 in New York City, only a short distance from Long Branch where she had been born in 1893 on August 22nd. Famous as a contributor to up-scale magazines. Known for her clever and witty remarks. Creator of light verse Superior short story author. Reporter covering the Spanish Civil War. Writer of screenplays. Contributor to fifteen films including "A Star is Born". Post World War II playwright.

Dorothy Parker -- a literary marvel of our times. Item #Q2001.
