Figure Skating
One of the most daring and dangerous routines in a pairs figure skating program is presented in this hand-painted COLLINS FDC. It is known as the "death spiral" and as it is being performed always captures the complete and undivided attention of the audience. The man holds his partner by one hand and she arches her entire body backward until her head is only inches from the ice surface. He pivots in a very small, fast and tight circle on his skates while his partner, now upside down and facing upward, is spun around in a graceful spiral with the back of her head remaining just inches from the potentially dangerous ice.
For those collectors who enjoy the subtle detail that hand painting allows, note the color coordination of both athletes' clothing. In this sport, attractive and fashionable eye-ctching costumes take the place of uniforms. Note the detail in the rink's surface portraying realistic skate scarred ice. Note how the background color in the text box ties the new stamp into the visual scheme by using the same shade of vibrant blue. With all aspects taken together, this First Day Cover with its hand-painted cachet spanning the entire width of the envelope is one I'm pleased to offer.
Death Spiral. Olympic Figure Skating. Item #Z1902. $10.50.
