HORACE MOSES - JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT
On August 5, 1984 I landed at the Fort Wayne, Indiana Airport.
My good friend Tom Adamowicz met me at the terminal. Our friendship goes back about eleven years to when his son T.J. and my daughter Becky were born on the same day and our wives were roommates. This April they will be visiting with us in New Jersey for five days.
The next morning, Carole and I took off for Bloomington as she was anxious to help and learn about FDCs. At the official city Post Office, the place was buzzing. Activity was intense as cover collectors and "Junior Achievement" conventioneers and regular patrons all got caught up in the First Day swirl. I was glad to spend some time with my very good friend and Ohio cachetmaker Mike Weddle. He's a hobby stalwart.
Carole quickly picked up the "lick and stick" routine, the postal ladies doing the hand First Day of Issue cancels did a beautiful job, and soon we were on the road to our unofficial city. The road led north, around the Indianapolis hub, and on to the small, rural farming community of Young America. I think this unofficial is outstanding for the Junior Achievement stamp. It is a clear, large bullseye with killer bars and it ties both stamps to the cover. The duo cancels of "First Day of Issue" and "Young America" combine to make this a very fine philatelic item.
The hand-painted cachet shows a young lady at a computer terminal with Horace Moses, founder of Junior Achievement, looking on from the background. The colors were carefully selected to coordinate with the bright orange of the stamps. The over-view of cachet, stamps and cancels make this a solid FDC.
After a busy day, Carole dropped me at the Indiananolis Airport and I started home with a sense of relief that once again everything went well. Item #P801 - $5.50.
