 Frank C. Laubach

Winter 2024 Mail Sale Commentary

Lot 24 S801 — Frank C. Laubach — 9/2/84

This issue is a very unique cover that combines many different elements that make it a desirable collectible. First, September 2, 1984 was a Sunday which was a very unusual occurrence for a stamp issue. I drove to the small north-central Pennsylvania community of Benton where Laubach grew up and where he and his wife spent years improving literacy as well as many years that were spent in underdeveloped countries implementing their teaching method "Each One — Teach One." Their home base was Syracuse University. A single received the Benton first day of issue cancel, and I then drove to Syracuse, NY for the perfect unofficial. The post office had established a one-day special cancel, and I was able to obtain it. It is a large pictorial showing a book, and on the cover the text reads "Each One — Teach One." It is a VERY nice cancel. Also making this cover unusual is that it is a hand-drawn and colored cachet. It was the third such Collins cachet, and it is simple but effective. This cover offers a cute hand done cachet, official first day of issue cancel from Benton, PA, and a rare Sunday unofficial first day cancel made more desirable by the fact that it is a pictorial designed for the Frank Laubach stamp. First time in one of my sales.
