U.S. Merchant Marine

Auxiliary Steamship

Collins Cover Announcement

Merchant Marine Ships

Auxiliary Steamship

In the mid-1800s an interesting merchant ship began transporting passengers, mail, and cargo across the Atlantic. It was a steamship, but because this technology was relatively new, there was also backup sailing rigging in case time-proven wind power was necessary to move the ship.

My individually hand painted cachet makes a great maritime First Day Cover. A side-paddle wheel which rotates by steam power and propels the ship is clearly visible. The water displacement caused by the taming wheel is clearly visible. Another testament to its steam power is the single, high smokestack at mid-ship. Finally, the feature that makes this such an interesting ship is the presence of three high masts. Should the steam engine shut down, the sails could be unfurled and the ship would continue its voyage.

During the age of the auxiliary steamships, various maritime laws changed the course of American merchant shipping. New regulations and laws increased shipboard safety and improved living standards. Currently, the United States Merchant Marine works with national and international organizations to improve conditions for its mariners and to prevent pollution of the world's seas and waterways.

Now ready is my hand watercolored Auxiliary Steamship. Collins #H4902 at $14.00.
