Collins Cover Announcement
Romare Bearden
Bearden was a prime example of an individual who grew as an artist by life experience as well as formal education. He worked extensively in several media including cartoons, oils, and collage. Born in Charlotte, NC on September 2, 1911, he graduated from Peabody High School in Pittsburgh, PA in
1929 and received his B.S. degree in science and education from New York University in 1935.
He studied under German artist George Grosz at the Arts Students League in 1936 and 1937. His paintings during this time were mostly of the American south, and his work was heavily influnced by Mexican muralists Diego Rivera and Jose Orozco. When World War II broke out, Romare voluntered for the United States Army and served from 1942 to 1945.
In 1950 he returned to Europe to study under the GI Bill and soon changed his style of art to abstract human representations. He also developed a love of music, and my individually hand painted cachet features the famous astist sitting with his cat while behind him is an example of his musical human abstract artwork features the famous artist sitting with his cat while behind him is an example of his musical human

For this mini-set of four stamps, I decided to do only two covers with a pair of the new stamps on each. They are placed in a vertical format, and a First Day of Issue bullseye postmark from New York City ties them to the envelope. I'm pleased to announce this very nice cachet for artist Romare Bearden with two stamps. Collins #P4901 at $14.50.
