Helen Hayes
"First Lady of the American Theatre"
The individually liând painted cachet for this Collins First Day Cover is what our hobby is all about, and you'll be very happy to have it in your collection. The realistic watercolors capture the feeling and drama portrayed by Helen Hayes and Gary Cooper at the beginning of their movie acting careers. It's a scene from the classic film "A Farewell to Arms" and it shows Helen as a nurse and Gary as a World War I soldier. As far as topics go, it becomes apparent that this First Day Cover is a "must own." Aside from future Collins collectors, this cachet will be sought by movie, military, and Americana topicalists.
The career of Helen Hayes spanned almost seventy years. She is one of only twelve people who have won at least one Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Award. In 1986 President Ronald Reagan awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom and in 1988 she was presented with the National Medal of Arts. Her illustrious career included numerous roles in films and on the stage on Broadway and in theatres worldwide. She performed on the radio and later made many appearances on television. Her professional career ended in 1985, and she died in Nyack, New York in 1993 at the age of 92.
Helen Hayes and Gary Cooper would, of course, go on to become famous movie stars and have long and very successful careers. But on this special cachet, they are captured as they appeared in 1932 in their leading roles in the American film classic "A Farewell to Arms. " I'm honored to offer this First Day Cover for the "First Lady of the American Theatre" — Helen Hayes. Collins #V4801 — $14.00.
