American Treasures

Flowers by William H. Johnson

Collins Cover Announcement

William H . Johnson

In the 1920s, this talented Afro-American artist was studying in France when he met Danish artist Holcha Krake. They got married in 1930 and spent the next decade in Scandinavia where William began to develop his interest in primitivism and folk art. This individually hand painted cachet features his work "Training for War" in the primitive style and is considered a prime example of American folk art.

This First Day Cover will appeal not only to Collins collectors but also to military, Black Heritage, and Americana topicalists as well. A fine portrait of Johnson is part of the cachet, and after his death in 1970, over 1,000 of his paintings became part of the collection of the American Art Museum in Washington.

The First Day Cover for folk artist William H. Johnson is now ready. Collins #N5001 at $14.00.
