SCOUTING
Subscriber-Only Limited Edition
In 1911 Juliette Gordon Low met Sir Robert Baden-Powell during a visit to England. He was the founder of the Boy Scouts and Girl Guides in that country. Wanting to promote this organization for girls in America, she returned to Georgia and gathered 18 interested girls. That group became the first American Girl Guides, and in 1913 their name was changed to Girl Scouts.
Since First Day Covers dealing with scouting are always hot collectibles, I wanted to do one of my limited-edition, subscriber-only cachets with that topic. This one shows both a Girl Scout and a Boy Scout enjoying the great outdoors. They are examining a turtle in a fresh-water marsh. The hand painting in watercolors captures the endearing scene beautifully including the small details such as the diminutive butterfly, distant sailboat, and trusty -scout knife. The uniforms are from the early 1900s, and I believe that this elusive cover will become one actively sought in the hobby.
As is always the case with my "sub-only" covers, no extras are available thus ensuring their limited status. The stamp and day of issue postmark are at the upper left creating a different look, and the hand painted cachet is a winner depicting both a Girl Scout and a Boy Scout. Collins #V5002 — $12.50.
