The Island of Molokai

Different species of Hawaiian wildlife are the main components of this lovely First Day Cover that features "the Friendly Island." At the upper left, a playful monk seal dives to the sea floor where he is greeted by an angel fish and a colorful coral formation. To the lower right, a pair of tropical birds nestle together.

The historical figure on this cover is the heroic Belgian priest Father Damien. In the 1800s he volunteered to administer to the natives who had contracted Hansen's disease (or leprosy). To prevent its spread, the sufferers had been isolated to a small area on Molokai. His arrival at the community was a turning point, for under his leadership-schools were established, working farms were organized, shacks were replaced by painted houses, and laws were strictly enforced. He built churches and oversaw the medical care provided to his secluded settlement. The cachet depicts a period portrait of the young priest and a rendition of his church.

The present-day beauty of Molokai is breathtaking, including the highest sea cliffs in the world. The residents have resisted attempts to drastically increase tourism and to develop pristine natural areas. As a result, National Geographic magazine has listed Molokai in the top ten inhabited islands in the world for environmental stewardship and preservation of local culture and traditions.

I'm pleased to announce my hand painted First Day Cover for a true tropical paradise — the island of Molokai. Collins #W4901 at $14.00.
