The Island of Oahu

The historic Hawaiian personality shown on this cachet is Duke Kahanamoku who was a world-class swimmer and surfer. Born into an established Hawaiian family in 1890, he grew up on the outskirts of Waikiki. He became an accomplished swimmer and surfer and, in his youth, used a board that was 16 feet long and weighed 114 pounds.

In 1912 he made the U.S. Olympie Team and won the Gold Medal in the 100 meter freestyle and a Silver in the 4x200 relay event. During the 1920 Olympics he won Gold Medals in both of those events. Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, Duke traveled-extensively promoting the sport of surfing, especially in the United States and Australia.

The individually watercolored cachet shows a portrait of Duke and one of his boards. At the top is worldfamous Diamond Head, and the familiar pineapple is prominently also depicted. The North Shore of Oahu is known for the huge waves that attract surfers from around the world. Such a wave is dramatically shown on this cachet.

My Aloha cover for Oahu is now ready, and it brings this beautiful five-cover series to completion. The Gathering Place — Island of Oahu. Collins #W4902 at $14.00.
