Sea Lion – California in Spring
Collins Cover Announcement
All Seasons
Marine Mammals Set of Four
Sea Lion
This individually hand painted cachet features a lame male sea lion in the spring breeding areas on remote islands off the coast of California. In the autumn and winter, he may migrate as far north as Vancouver, British Columbia while the females and young pups will remain near the shore of California year round.
When on land, this playful marine mammal can move fairly fast using front and back flippers. In the water, sea lions are swift and acrobatic. They can dive to an incredible 450 feet and can stay under water for twenty minutes. Their diet consists mostly of fish and squid.
With this water colored rendition of the sleek sea lion, this bold wildlife set comes to completion. Please check to make sure you have all four because in the years ahead, future Collins collectors and wildlife topicalists will certainly be looking for them on the open market.
When this "All Seasons" set was issued, I knew I wanted to do something unique and eye-catching for Collins collectors. After considering many potential design ideas, I decided to encompass three main themes. Each cover would represent a different geographic area of the country — Northeast, Southeast, Northwest, and Southwest. Each cover would represent one of the four seasons to coordinate with the "All Seasons" designation of the stamps. And, each individually hand painted cachet would have a large, detailed water colored rendition of a magnificent marine mammal. Mission accomplished, and now ready is the sea lion off coastal California in the spring. Collins #C5201. $14.00
