Collins Cover Announcement
Johnny Cash
"Ring of Fire"
A special cachet variety seemed to be fitting for this legendary performer, so my second First Day Cover for him features his big hit song. "Ring of Fire. " The individually hand painted cachet shows Cash playing his guitar in front of a ring of flames. The use of watercolors makes this a very eye-catching cover, and it joins my previously announced "Man in Black" as my tribute to this great country vocalist.
Cash researched his heritage and found he was mostly of Scottish and English ancestry, and Cash Loch in Fife, Scotland bears the family naine. He moved from Texas_to Memphis in 1954 and in June of 1955 made his first recording for Sun Records. On December 4, 1956, Elvis Presley dropped in at the Sun Studios while Carl Perkins was recording with Jerry Lee Lewis. Johnny Cash also happened to be in the studio, and the four of them started to play and sing in an impromptu jam session. Fortunately their informal and spontaneous gettogether was recorded. The numbers they recorded survive, and their one day group has been called "The Million Dollar Quartet."
In the late 1950s, his rendition of "Ring of Fire" was a crossover hit — being number 1 on the country music charts and in the top 20 on the pop charts. It was co-written by June Carter whom Johnny married on March 1, 1968. They toured and worked together for 35 years until she died in 2003. Johnny died four months later. He was a true pioneer of rockabilly and rock & roll in the 1950s. Then, for decades, he was an American and international star famous for country music. Now available with his Ring of Fire is Johnny Cash. Collins 4E5202 at $14.00.
