New England Coastal Lighthouses
Portland Head Lighthouse, ME
Collins Cover Announcement
New England Coastal Lighthouses
Portland Head Light, Maine
This historic lighthouse is located in Cape Elizabeth, Maine and is the oldest in the state. Construction was begun in 1787 with a directive from George Washington, and it was completed and first lit in January of 1791. The first illumination was by the use of whale oil lamps.
Today the light station is automated, and the tower, beacon. and foghorn are maintained United States Coast Guard. The former lighthouse keepers' house is a museum, and the lighthouse itself was added to the National Register of Historic Places on April 24, 1973.
By using the envelope in vertical format, I am best able to present this magnificent set of individunlly hand painted cachets. Each of the five will feature a historic lighthouse from a different New England State, and each will have a first day of issue bullseye postmark from that respective state. The use of watercolors on each and every cover not only ensures an accurate rendition of these beautiful maritime structures but also allows artistic flexibility to create superb seacoast art with color variations of ocean and sky.
This set of five will be a wonderful addition to any Collins or topical collection. Now ready is Maine's lovely and historic Portland Head Light. Collins #H5201 at $14.00.
