The 1963 March on Washington

Martin Luther King, Jr. Portrait Cachet

This historical event which was one of the largest political rallies in the history of the United States, focused on civil and economic rights for African Americans. It was here that on August 28, 1963 in front of the Lincoln Memorial that Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his inspiring and poignant "I Have A Dream" speech.

The march was organized by various religious, civil rights, and labor groups with a theme of "jobs and freedom." The event is credited with helping to pass the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. It is widely accepted that approximately 250,000 people participated in the march.

In my early years of cachetmaking, I produced a cachet that featured Dr. King, and it sold out rather quickly. This individually hand painted portrait cachet of the quiet leader who spoke forcefully but peacefully turned out beyond my expectations. It truly captures an inspirational and far-sighted expression. Now ready is the 1963 march and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. who "Had a Dream." Collins #L5201 at $14.00.
